Leaving Social Media To Blog

Leaving Social Media To Blog

Blogging in 2024 — I never thought I’d see this for myself again, yet here I am. Welcome to my blog.

The last time I’ve blogged was around 2009 (much simpler times).

We can all agree that social media has become this overstimulating, demanding entity on all of us. This obviously isn’t the first time someone is mentioning leaving it behind — nowadays, most are taking this route.

That alone should be concerning.

It’s bad enough that we can’t go on scrolling without seeing an ad or sponsored post of some sort. Every few seconds, we’re either bombarded with a new strategy to grow the platform or tempted by something that we can’t resist buying. The speed at which content is created isn’t healthy, in my opinion — and our outputs are a direct reflection of our inputs. Consuming lots of short-form,  quick-paced content overtime can make people erratic — especially if you haven’t placed proper boundaries on how you’re consuming.

Matthew 11: 28 - 29 - Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

It’s said that, on average, a person uses about six social media platforms. What’s crazier is that new platforms are constantly being introduced — and for every new one created it seems to fade out just as quickly.

Will there ever be an end? I doubt it.

It’s not mandatory to use these platforms but FMO (fear of missing out) can creep in — especially if you’re running a business, since social media is the spot for potential leads. You never know where your next client or opportunity may come from.

In this era of constant digital engagement social media usage we’re given the chance to either adapt or jump ship altogether. Adapting is essential to our evolution as people — but at what point does adapting become too much? When our social batteries are drained on social media all we want to do is decompress. So the last thing we need is more short-form content. Long-form, slower-paced content is what we all need to balance what we’re consuming — think YouTube, podcasts, and blogs winks. Overtime my screen time has gone from one hour, to thirty minutes, to just five minutes per social platform.

Ecclesiastes 3:6 -   A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away;

I’ve been feeling a nudge from God to fast from social media (among other things) but the longer I stay away, the more clearly I see the benefits. It goes without saying that social media breaks regulate dopamine levels while also increasing productivity and mindfulness.

The game being played on social media today isn’t the same as it was eight years ago. The primary goal for every platform now is to benefit the platform itself, not the user.

The ROI (return on investment) just doesn’t make sense for the average social person.

The more effort you put into something, the more you should benefit from it. Unless God himself specifically tells you to stay and toil, you should walk away from what’s draining you.

Switching to blogging made perfect sense — because the lifespan of a blog post far outlasts a social media post. I finally feel like I’m breathing again. I’m no longer at the mercy of the algorithm’s approval. It’s quieter on this side. I feel more focused and intentional. I’m excited to see the fruit of pouring more into my website now that God has placed blogging on my heart.

Like with anything that you’re trying to quit, it’s important to note that weening yourself off is often the most effective approach. Going cold turkey might work for some, but not most. I pray you get there — if you’ve decided to walk away.

Love your sis in Christ
